Are you drinking enough water?
You certainly know that water is an essential element of our organism, as it represents 65% of an adult body’s components, and even more in infants. Moreover, if survival without food can last several weeks, we cannot survive without water for more than about 3 days. We tend to drink only when the sensation of thirst arises via brain signals sent by the hypothalamus. However, when this sensation is triggered, we are already lacking water...
Research has already looked at this issue many times, and the idea that a single volume of water is suitable for everyone seems unlikely. Indeed, the needs vary according to age, gender, but also to the ambient humidity, altitude, latitude, and whether the person is athletic. The values can vary from 1.5L to 6L per day! It seems that the needs would also vary according to the human development index of the country concerned, a measure based on the quality of life of the inhabitants.
Are you currently dehydrated? There is a very simple technique to find out: pinch your skin at a joint. If your skin immediately snaps back into place, you are well hydrated. However, if it takes several seconds to return to its baseline state, you are potentially under-hydrated. But in any case, taking a little break to get a glass of water doesn't hurt!
