Free contraception for everyone

05/11/2019

Did you know that, in France today, only women over 15 years of age benefit from full reimbursement for the contraceptive pill.

As for girls under 15, though, France offers no reimbursement for contraceptive methods, nor for any gynaecological tests or related biological analyses.

Consequently, young girls who are sexually active, sometimes in vulnerable situations, are often forced to seek out emergency contraception or, when it’s already too late, to abort unwanted pregnancies. In France, around 1000 young women aged 12 to 14 become pregnant every year, and nearly 70% of these pregnancies are aborted.

This is why new financing is being proposed by the French social security organisation aimed at limiting the number of young pregnancies and abortions, extending the right to full reimbursement of the contraceptive pill to women under 15 by 2020.
