How to protect against Lyme disease
The medical world is also growing more and more competent at diagnosing this disease. Transmitted by tick bites, Lyme disease develops in three phases and its evolution varies significantly from person to person.
The first phase is characterised in most cases by the appearance of an erythema approximately 10cm across shaped like a wide red circle. This is often accompanied by headaches and joint or muscle pain. In the second phase, neurological symptoms manifest as well, and all these symptoms worsen in the third phase until they become chronic. The final outcome can be fatal.
So care should be taken to protect yourself, but how? Firstly, as opposed to common beliefs, ticks do not fall from trees but actually live in high grass. Around 4 to 6 hours after potential exposure, then, such as a walk in the forest or sitting in a park, it’s a good idea to check yourself all over for ticks. Ideally, get your partner to check for you, and make sure you don’t forget all skin folds, hollows and cavities.
