Is there a link between hearing aids and longevity?
Hearing loss affects about ๐.๐ ๐๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐ฉ๐๐จ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐ ๐ฐ๐จ๐ซ๐ฅ๐๐ฐ๐ข๐๐, and its prevalence increases year after year. This condition is associated with reduced quality of life, a higher risk of depression and dementia, and high mortality. In addition, it has been shown that the risk of death doubles per 30 dB of hearing loss in these patients. ๐๐๐๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐๐ข๐๐ฌ are the first-line treatment for most people, with ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฌ๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ ๐ซ๐๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ญ๐ฌ ๐จ๐ง ๐ญ๐ก๐๐ข๐ซ ๐ก๐๐๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ฅ๐จ๐ฌ๐ฌ ๐๐ง๐ ๐ช๐ฎ๐๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ ๐จ๐ ๐ฅ๐ข๐๐.
However, the link between mortality risk and wearing hearing aids had never been studied. An American study published in the journal ๐ฟ๐๐๐๐๐ก ๐ป๐๐๐๐กโ๐ฆ ๐ฟ๐๐๐๐๐ฃ๐๐ก๐ฆ the results of a 13-year longitudinal cohort study, including ๐,๐๐๐ ๐ข๐ง๐๐ข๐ฏ๐ข๐๐ฎ๐๐ฅ๐ฌ ๐ฐ๐ข๐ญ๐ก ๐ก๐๐๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ฅ๐จ๐ฌ๐ฌ. They confirmed that hearing loss was ๐๐ฌ๐ฌ๐จ๐๐ข๐๐ญ๐๐ ๐ฐ๐ข๐ญ๐ก ๐ก๐ข๐ ๐ก๐๐ซ ๐ฆ๐จ๐ซ๐ญ๐๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ in their cohort, and that the risk of ๐ฆ๐จ๐ซ๐ญ๐๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ ๐ฐ๐๐ฌ ๐ซ๐๐๐ฎ๐๐๐ in individuals with hearing loss ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ก๐๐๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐๐ข๐๐ฌ, compared with those who did not wear them.
The authors have made several hypotheses to explain this link. Indeed, the use of hearing aids could ๐ซ๐๐๐ฎ๐๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐๐๐ฅ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐จ๐ ๐ฅ๐จ๐ง๐๐ฅ๐ข๐ง๐๐ฌ๐ฌ, ๐ฌ๐จ๐๐ข๐๐ฅ ๐ข๐ฌ๐จ๐ฅ๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง, ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐๐ฉ๐ซ๐๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ข๐จ๐ง, which would contribute to a decrease in mortality. In addition, hearing aid users are potentially more health conscious and more likely to have regular medical follow-up. Finally, hearing loss could also have an effect on the brain structure, due to the absence of auditory stimuli.
