London bans junk food advertising!

26/06/2018

"Tackling the childhood obesity epidemic is a crucial part of ensuring that all Londoners are able to flourish and lead healthy lives."

Sadiq Khan, the mayor of London, has made this Twitter announcement concerning his intention to cut down childhood obesity in London, where nearly 40% of 10-11 year olds are obese or overweight.

Any advertising for foods high in fat, sugar or salt will now be banned from the Underground. This new measure has come on the heels of a recent law implemented to prevent any establishment from selling hot fast food within 400 meters of any London schools. Fast-food chains will no longer be able to advertise for chips, fizzy drinks or other “unhealthy” products in Underground stations, and are ordered to rather promote their "healthy" options like salads and fruit.

This new measure announced by London’s mayor is yet another of a series of actions including the ban on advertising for food high in fat, sugar or salt from British TV, as well as on the internet and in the press, in effect since July 2017.
