Luminotherapy

15/05/2018

After a long harsh winter, we all rejoice at the first rays of sun. Suddenly we feel happier and full of energy…

When you think about this feeling, it’s easy to understand how luminotherapy (a treatment using light) works to alleviate certain mood disorders such as depression, and particularly seasonal affective disorder.
In winter, the lack of light can cause symptoms like depressive mood and a disproportionate need to sleep more. Daily exposure to artificial light that imitates sunlight can thus compensate for this and treat the corresponding symptoms.
Depending on what time you undergo luminotherapy, the exposure to this artificial light can also help you better manage problems with your circadian sleep rhythms when out of sync, such as when you have jetlag or get into bad sleeping habits.
