𝐒𝐮𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐬 must be biocompatible, non-cytotoxic, non-inflammatory, 𝐧𝐨𝐧-𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐱𝐢𝐜, and should not trigger foreign body response. Genotoxicity is the 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐦𝐮𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 that can potentially lead to 𝐭𝐮𝐦𝐨𝐫 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡. However, even if genotoxicity standards and guidelines exist, the side effects reported in relation to implantable devices show that efforts must be pursued in this direction.
Genotoxicity tests already exist but are complex to set up for the evaluation of implants. The authors have therefore developed a 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦 that is 𝐬𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐫, 𝐟𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 to set up. The new device saves space and cuts test time in half compared with conventional tests. This is the first genotoxicity test based on the use of a 𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐥𝐮𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐜 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐩, with the possibility to use the test in an automated or manual version.
The promising results of this study will make genotoxicity testing 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 and enable 𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐝𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐱𝐢𝐜 𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐤 for large populations of biomaterials. The article is already available on the journal's website! DOI: 10.1039/D2AY01873J.
