Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFPEF) is associated with comorbidities involving an increase in mean platelet volume (MPV), a result of increased platelet turnover. MPV is associated with heart failure morbidity and mortality, but no study had yet compared the MPV of HFPEF patients with that of controls to investigate the potential prognostic value of this marker.
The authors found that MPV was higher in HFPEF patients compared with the control group. Patients with elevated MPV had more history of ischemic cardiomyopathy. According to this article, high MPV would be a strong and independent poor outcome predictor in HFPEF patients.
Overall, these results highlighted that MPV could be an interesting prognostic marker for predicting the clinical course of HFPEF patients and that platelets could have an important role in HFPEF pathophysiology.
