Congratulations to Dr. Goutelle, Dr Maréchal, and colleagues on the publication of their article “Mass spectrometry analysis of environmental pollutants in breast and artificial milk for newborns” in the 𝐻𝑒𝑙𝑖𝑦𝑜𝑛 journal. We are delighted to have contributed to the success of this article!

Environmental toxins, especially 𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐬 that accumulate in adipose tissues, pose a 𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐤 𝐭𝐨 𝐧𝐞𝐰𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐡 𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐤 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐤. In a study conducted in Charleroi, Belgium, liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry were used to analyze these toxins.

Among 39 breast milk and 12 artificial milk samples, pesticides were found in 15 and six samples, respectively, with a total of 𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐩𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐬 identified. There was a 𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 between the 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐡 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐞 by mothers and 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐬 in breast milk.

The study highlights the broader 𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐨𝐱𝐢𝐧 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞 in infants regardless of feeding method and the importance of 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲 of breast milk and synthetic milk. It calls for comprehensive measures to mitigate these risks, especially for 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐰𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐬, and suggests the 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐟𝐮𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡.
