Congratulations to Pr. Molinier and his team on the publication of their study on the impact of COVID-19 on lung cancer (LC) patients in the journal Cancers. We are delighted to have contributed to this great achievement!

The COVID-19 pandemic caused a 𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐩 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐬, as patients with non-severe COVID-19 symptoms were advised to stay at home so as not to 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐛𝐮𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦. We know that this delayed diagnosis, but lockdown consequences on LC patients in terms of clinical presentation, treatment delay, and long-term prognosis are 𝐩𝐨𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐨𝐝.

The authors conducted a 𝐦𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫, 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥, 𝐨𝐛𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐲 of two groups of patients diagnosed with LC: one who had been 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐂𝐎𝐕𝐈𝐃-𝟏𝟗 (2020 cohort) and 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐡𝐚𝐝 𝐧𝐨𝐭 (2029 cohort). A total of 816 patients were included. The cohorts did not differ, except in mean age and number of non-smokers. Delays to 𝐩𝐫𝐞-𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 after the first imaging examination in the 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟎 𝐩𝐨𝐩𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. Moreover, belonging to this cohort correlated with better prognosis. Overall, the first confinement had 𝐧𝐨 𝐧𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭 on lung cancer patients.

The results illustrated the 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐝𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 of the national healthcare system in thoracic oncology during the pandemic, in a 𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐡 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧 where the consequences of the pandemic were 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐬𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐞.
