In France, a new decree prohibiting the use of names related to meat products for plant-based protein foods will come into force on October 1, 2022.
The consumption of farmed meat has doubled in the last 50 years, making the agricultural sector one of the most polluting. However, there are many vegetable alternatives, which will soon no longer be called “steaks”, “sausages”, or “tenderloins”.
The exclusive use of this terminology pleases the professionals of the animal sectors who advocate the respect of traditions and the preservation of know-how. The French National Observatory of Vegetable Food (ONAV) deplores this decree which it considers conservative and counter-productive in view of the climate emergency we are facing.
One thing is certain, reducing our consumption of meat products has advantages for our own health and that of the planet.
