Oakland is now the second American city to decriminalise hallucinogenic mushrooms

23/07/2019

Last month, Denver was the first city of the United States of America to decriminalise consumption of hallucinogenic mushrooms.

This month, it’s been joined by Oakland, California. This city decriminalised the possession and use of mushrooms and other psychoactive plants in the over 21s. Selling these substances, however, is still illegal.

Used recreationally as well as medically, psychedelic substances are known for their beneficial effects on psychological disorders. Several recent studies have reported that psilocybin (the active principal in hallucinogens) does not create dependency and can even help with serious depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress and addiction.

In 2014, a study proved its efficacy against tobacco addiction 1 , while another in 2015 demonstrated its impact against alcohol addiction. Psilocybin was even proven effective in treating depression that does not respond to other treatments in 2016. Experts do, however, underline that this substance is not for everyone and it is advisable to consult a doctor before taking any.
