The Zika virus: the first case in France

26/11/2019

Last October, a woman was infected by the Zika virus in the French département of Var.

As you probably already know, the Zika virus is transmitted by the tiger mosquito, just like dengue fever or chikungunya, and can also be communicated through sexual contact.

The virus causes high fever, pain and skin rash, as well as being at the origin of congenital deformities in the babies of infected mothers. In 2016, over 66 000 people were infected in the Antilles islands during one of the greatest Zika epidemics.

The local French Regional Health Agency has confirmed that the patient diagnosed with Zika in French city Hyères is now cured, yet urges anyone presenting with typical symptoms (skin rash, muscular and joint pain, fever, headache, fatigue) to immediately see their doctor, especially if they have recently been to a tropical country
