Think before popping another paracetamol

Paracetamol is one of the most familiar molecules to the general public, yet it should still be used always with respect to its indications. For, though it can be found in nearly every home’s bathroom cabinet, it’s not as innocent as it may seem.

A recent tragedy reminded us all how all medication must be taken strictly following the guidelines. A young woman in Strasbourg, France, recently died from an overdose after self-medicating with too much paracetamol over several days. Great care must thus be taken when using medication, as over-consumption of paracetamol can cause intoxication leading to the destruction of hepatic cells, preventing the liver from performing its vital functions.

Reminding us of the essentials about paracetamol consumption, Professor Bruno Mégarbane, head of toxicology resuscitation at Lariboisière hospital in Paris, underlines that adults should not take more than 3 to 4g per day, at a maximum of 1g each time and leaving 6 hours between each dose.
