World Diabetes Day

14/11/2018

World Diabetes Day is celebrated every year, on November 14, the birthday of Frederick Banting, whose work with Charles Best led to the discovery of insulin in 1921.

The day was first introduced in 1991 to raise awareness about diabetes, and particularly its causes and
prevention, and the devastating effects it has on human lives and healthcare systems worldwide.

The blue circle is the international symbol for diabetes. It was created in 2006 to support a campaign for
a United Nations Resolution on Diabetes as a response to the growing global diabetes pandemic. The
circle symbolizes positivity, unity, and strength, while the blue reflects the color of the sky and the flag of
the United Nations.
