World Osteoporosis Day

20/10/2018

World Osteoporosis Day, marked on October 20 each year, has been designed to raising global awareness on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of this so common metabolic bone condition, reaching out to healthcare professionals, the media, and policymakers worldwide.

Osteoporosis, also termed porous bone, refers to a bone condition in which the body looses too much
bone, makes too little bone, or both. Consequently, bones become very weak and may thus break after a fall - in more serious cases - following minor bumps.

This condition is rather common, with one in two women suffering from the disease. The best tool for
diagnosis is a bone density test, also called dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry or DEXA. While there is no
cure available for the condition, modern management comprises specific medications, healthy diet, and
weight bearing exercices to prevent further bone loss and strengthen existing weak bone. More
